The annual “Bo Terry” Tennis Tournament was held on August 28 & 29, 2010. This college scholarship benefit is sponsored by the men of Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi Fraternities. This year’s tournament was dedicated to the loss of several fraternity members. Brother James “B.B.” King, Jr. of Kappa Alpha Psi and Brother Robert “Bob” Turner of Omega Psi Phi passed away during the week of the tournament. Brother Alfred McCain, Sr. of Omega Psi Phi passed away the week before the tournament.  Al “Skip” McCain is the past polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He is the son of Alfred McCain, Sr. These brothers worked hard in our community and made numerous contributions over the years. They will be greatly missed as they enter into their heavenly chapters.

The new men’s singles champion this year was Danny Cornelio. Jerome Hamm won second place in the singles competition. The men’s doubles champion team was Eddie Blair and Johnny Nash. They won a close 3 set match over second place Perry Coles and Pink Wimbish. Jacquelyn Jacobs and Pink Wimbish won the mixed doubles championship over last year’s champs Pam and Roger Hurt.

The tournament would also like to recognize additional donations from Eddie Blair, Johnny Nash and John “Snake” Harris. These extra donations were greatly appreciated as well as all tournament participation. All donations are tax deductible. We hope to see you next August.

It is with much sorrow and a heavy heart that I tell you today that our chapter lost our dear brother, James “B.B.” King. He was dedicated to Kappa and was very involved in his community. He will truly be missed.

Mr. James (BB) King Jr., 64, of Roanoke, Va., died suddenly Tuesday morning, August 24, 2010, in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on August 13, 1946, in Martinsville, Va., to the late James Henry “Richard” King Sr. and Catherine Morris King. He was the grandson of the late William Henry and Catherine Deshazo King, and great-grandson, of Sam and Lizzie Morris. James was a retired teacher of the Roanoke City Public Schools and active in many social and civic organizations: Life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, President of Roanoke Alumni Chapter of Saint Paul’s College, President of Dinner Dance Club, Past President of Roanoke Pan Hellenic Council, Staunch member of the Saint Paul’s College Football Support Team, A Mule of Roanoke Chapter Moles, a “Continental Guy” and Voice of William Fleming Colonels basketball teams. “BB,” as he was affectionately called attended St. Paul High Street Baptist Church in Martinsville, Va., and High Street Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va. He graduated from Albert Harris High School in 1964 and graduated from St. Paul’s College in 1969. James is survived by his loving wife, Gloria Randolph-King; two stepdaughters, Angela Hampton, of Chesapeake, Va., and Monique Randolph, of Richmond, Va.; and cherished stepgranddaughter, Ciara Hampton, of Chesapeake, Va. Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at High Street Baptist Church with the Rev. David L. Chapman officiating. The interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 27, 2010, at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home with a Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Memorial held at 6:15 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.Hamlar-Curtis.com.

Sunday, August 22nd, the Roanoke Kappa Foundation, the scholarship arm of the Roanoke Alumni Chapter, awarded scholarships to two college-bound high school graduates. Taylor Redmond, who will be attending Hampden Sydney this Fall and Al Meeks, III, who will be attending Virginia Union this Fall, both received $1000 scholarships. We wish both recipients a great first semester and a successful college experience. The Roanoke Kappa  Foundation would like to thank Cuz’s Body Shop  Auto Repair for contributing half of the scholarship money that was awarded.

House pins Jones, a new initiate.

Our chapter would like to welcome new Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity initiate Ed Jones! Jones participated in the Eastern Province Summer intake process which was held in Richmond, Virginia on July 31, 2010. Jones was one of sixteen initiates that joined our fraternity that weekend, including Benjamin T. Jealous, President & CEO of the NAACP; and Wade J. Henderson, President & CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. Brothers Jealous and Henderson were initiated through the Washington, DC Alumni Chapter. They are considered two of the most significant advocates for the rights of the disenfranchised in this country. Greg House is the chapter intake coordinator and worked with Jones throughout the entire process. We look forward to Brother Jones input and participation with our chapter!

Brother of the Year, Emanuel Arnold

The Roanoke Alumni Chapter named Emanuel Arnold Brother of the Year for the 2009-2010 fraternal year,
for his outstanding dedication to the chapter. A 2006 initiate, Arnold is the chapter Keeper of the Records
and also serves as the Eastern Province Reporter and webmaster. Keep striving for achievement!

The chapter participated in a park clean-up at Elmwood Park in Roanoke, Virginia on Saturday, May 22, 2010. Since 2007, the chapter has been an active participant in the local adopt-a-park program. Brother Ricky Sykes chaired this initiative.

The Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter hosted its annual Crimson and Cream Scholarship Dance on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the St. Elias Social Hall in Roanoke, Virginia. Approximately 250 guests enjoyed the evening’s entertainment. The chapter step team entertained the guests with their smooth and precise steps. Door prizes were also given away. The event was chaired by Al Elliott.
